Major Johnson, N6EOE, earned a Commercial First Class Radiotelephone Operator License in 1970, (now called a General Radiotelephone Operator License). At about the same time, he earned his General Class amateur-radio license.
He served as Reserve Police Officer in California from 1971 to 2002, retiring with the rank of sergeant. He also went into the commercial radio communications business in 1976, serving in various capacities and for several companies. He still works part-time in that industry.
In 1996, he obtained a private-pilot licens and joined the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) in California in 2002, in part because "my wife said that she wanted me out of the house a couple of nights each week." He and his wife moved to Albuquerque in 2008, where he joined Squadron II at Kirtland AFB and was assigned as the Squadron Communications Officer, a position he also held in California.
Currently, he holds a CAP Master Rating in Communications and a Senior Rating as a Mission Observer, basically the mission commander, as well as Communications Unit Leader rating and a trainer/evaluator rating for both communications and air crew.
