Joe Spier, K6WAO

Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT®)
In October of last year, the AMSAT-NA Board of Directors elected Joe Spier, K6WAO, of Reno, NV, president of AMSAT. He also experiments with satellite operations, strange antennas, DX, SDRs, and APRS.

As one of Joe’s good friend’s three-year-old granddaughter said last summer, “What’s a Joe?” Joe is simply an amateur-radio operator, K6WAO, formerly KF6JQF. First licensed more than 20 years ago, Joe now has his Amateur Extra class license. Joe also has FCC Commercial licenses and is a Life Member of AMSAT. Professionally, he has been a specialist, technician, supervisor, staff aide, systems engineer, instructor, engineer, and RF designer. For AMSAT over the past seven years, Joe has served as an associate director, director, vice-president, ARISS Mentor, executive vice-president, and now president.

Joe says, “One essential quality I bring to this new-to-me position is a passion for what I do.” He also has Life Memberships in the ARRL, the Society of Amateur Radio Astronomers, theAir Force Association and is a member of the RSGB. Joe will be an instructor at the AMSAT Academy, give a forum presentation, and will be the featured speaker at the hamfest's Farewell Breakfast Banquet on Sunday morning, Sept. 23.
