James Hanlon, W8KGI

James T. "Jim" Hanlon, W8KGI, was born in 1938 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew up in adjacent Fort Thomas, Kentucky.  At age 13, he earned his first amateur licenses, WN4VIV and W4VIV.  Jim earned three degrees in Electrical Engineering from The Ohio State University, BEE in 1961, MS in 1962, and PhD in 1967, adding an Extra Class license in 1966.  He worked for Bell Telephone Labs in Whippany and Murray Hill, NJ, from 1962 to 1965, taught EE at Ohio State from 1965 through 1968, returned to Bell Labs in Allentown, PA, in 1968 and then moved to the Columbus, OH, Bell Labs in 1970. While there, he acquired his current call, W8KGI. While with Bell Labs, Jim developed ultrasonic devices, designed semiconductor memory, and was a supervisor in the Electromechanical Switching Apparatus Laboratory.  In 1989 Jim transferred to Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) in Albuquerque where he specialized in component engineering.  He retired from SNL in 2003.  Jim and his wife Kathy live in Sandia Park, New Mexico.  In retirement Jim continues to upgrade his collection of "Boatanchor" amateur radios.  He also sings and plays guitar, poorly, but with a selection of Irish pub songs, and Spanish and English church music.
