George Yoakum, WB5USB

George, WB5USB, graduated from Durango High School in Colorado in 1966.  He became a licensed ham around 1970 and upgraded to Advanced several years later. George joined the Navy after his his-school graduation and worked in the machine shop on board the USS Gridley DLG 21 and later reclassified as CLG 21. The ship was stationed in the Gulf of Tonkin, plane guard for the USS Enterprise.

After leaving the Navy, George earned his bachelor of science degree in biology from  University of New Mexico, with a minor in chemistry, and met his wife, Bobbie, there. Her call: N5WMM.

George has worked for Scientific Laboratory Systems, spent 20 years teaching science and math, took a parttime job at Citadel Communications, and now has fully retired.

George was fairly active on VHF with some HF activity until he retired. Now he mostly operates on HF CW from mountain summits and on VHF and UHF at home. He got hooked on Summit on the Air (SOTA) after
hiking to his first summit W5N/SI-001, Sandia Crest, in July of 2012. He enjoys getting out on the weekends with others involved in SOTA, to hike various summits and set up operations at the top. He uses a KX3 on the summits and likes to experiment with portable antennas.
