As a teenager, Bob's initial interest in radio was as a shortwave listener (SWL) using a large portable radio with AM and shortwave bands bought with money earned delivering newspapers. He used a Knight Kit Star Roamer after that.
A few years later, he again became interested in SWLing, bought an Icom receiver and erected a wire antenna. A curious neighbor suggested he study to get an amateur-radio license. The neighbor, Don K5BIS, then became Bob's Elmer. Bob's first contact with a Novice license took place in July 1981. He upgraded to a General Class license the following February, passed his Advance Class test in May 1983, and he earned an Amateur Extra class license in October 1983.
Bob's main interest is working DX and is active from 160 meters through 2 meters, plus 70cm. He has achieved DXCC Honor Roll, Mixed, Phone and CW DXCC, plus 8 Band DXCC.
He is now retired after several decades of sales and management working in the architectural/industrial paint & coatings industry.
