Extra! Extra! Part 1: Give Your Media Release a Fighting Chance
Your ultimate audience is readers or viewers. But we’ll focus on your immediate audience – editors, reporters, and producers – and how you and your club can boost the chances that these folks will give your media release at least a second look. This includes good visuals - a.k.a. photos. We'll nibble at this in  Part 1 in preparation for an assignment and a fuller meal in Sunday's E! E!Part 2.

Hamming Vacation to the mid-Atlantic - Azores 2015
They called themselves the HQ Doods, an informal group of hams at ARRL Headquarters who join forces to conduct occasional DXpeditions. In 2015, the target was the Azores to help activate three of its nine islands for that year's Worked All Europe SSB Contest. Bruce and his fellow Doods will take you on an armchair tour of the event -- part DXpedition, part multi-op contest, part vacation. The expedition also included Brian's wife, Katelyn, KA5TLN, and three other hams. Supply your own sunscreen.

The ABCs of QRP
You'll sometimes hear hams grumble: "Life's too short for QRP." After all, your radio is pumping out only 5 watts or less. I'll encourage you to see for yourself that life is too short not to operate QRP! It gives you the opportunity to build your own simple gear, either from a kit or from scratch, to get up close and personal with the principles of propagation and antenna design and construction, to operate from mountaintops, or go maritime mobile from a canoe or kayak. If is too short for QRP, then it's too short for fly-fishing, bow hunting, or any other activity where the thrill is in using the least amount of gear and a growing body of knowledge and experience to make contacts with hams worldwide.

C'mon in! The RF's fine!

Meet the Parametric Receive Audio System
Earlier this year, audio wizard Bob Heil of Heil Sound unveiled a new device for amateur operators -- the Parametric Receive Audio System. Essentially, it's an audio equalizer that allows you to tailor your receiver's audio output to best fit your hearing's response to the full range of audio frequencies. It's designed to be used with a powered speaker, which provides extra amplification, or through its built-in headphone amplifiers. Bob will introduce you to the system and his goals in developing it.

Mentoring 101 - Developing Great Elmers
A relatively new term (QST March 1971, "How’s DX," by W9BRD), Elmers seems to be fading away. A recent blog by K6BNU suggests the lack of Elmers is one of the largest factors influencing low ARRL and local club membership rates. Declining license renewals is the other rationale behind the immediate need to train [and educate] Elmers. Bill will lead a discussion on what it takes to develop an effective Elmer program. This is part of his vision as New Mexico's new Section Manager. Attend and participate so together we can keep amateur radio viable in our section and yours.

Ladies Sewing Circle and RF Society Forum - or – No BOYZ Allowed
If YLs had invented hamfests, the forums would be entirely different.  They would not be “classroom” style with an expert speaker pontificating using a PowerPoint presentation with an occasional question from the audience, and the distracting near-continuous door openings and closings as the panel nears its finish. If the women were in charge, a forum would be held around a large kitchen table that sported a bottomless coffee pot.   Around the table, you'd find animated conversation:  questions asked and answered; tips suggested; and experiences shared.

We’ll have to do without the kitchen table and coffee pot, but all YLs are welcome to join in the fun as we discuss YLs - Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.

RMS Titanic Disaster: Proving Radio's Worth
Paul Harden, a historian as well as a ham-radio-homebrew savant, tells the tangled tale of the growing pains in the early days of radio during the 1912 Titanic disaster. But in the end, Marconi's network of relay stations worked, ushering in a period of rapid growth in the adoption of radio at sea -- and heralded the beginning of amateur radio as a federally licensed service.

Extra! Extra! Part 2: They Need Good Pix; You Can Take Them
From local weeklies to metro dailies, many publications have had to cut staff and do more with less, including fewer photographers. Yet a good image can sell an otherwise marginal story. So make sure your never-marginal media release includes photos. Yes, you can take images that outlets will want to publish, rather than images they fell impelled to publish because a so-so image is all that was at hand. It takes practice. But you can do it, even with a cell-phone camera. We’ll cover some basics of composition, look at some nifty darkroom apps that can help add zing to your images, and analyze images you will have taken with your cell-phone camera or digital camera at the hamfest -- the assignment mentioned at the end of Part 1's talk.

Straight Key Century Club: Where Artisanal CW Meets RF
In 2006, the Straight Key Century Club was born when a handful of participants in that year's ARRL Straight Key Night agreed to work to keep the spirit of the League's activity going all year long. Nearly 13 years later, the club has mushroomed, with members spanning six of the seven continents. (Some may be visitors to the seventh, but they haven't identified themselves yet.)  We'll take a look at the range of activities the club offers for enhancing CW skills using those reliable tools: straight key, sideswiper, and semi-automatic key, or bug. Representatives of the club will staff a club table in the Grand Foyer on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. They'll have brass on hand that you can pound, gently.
