W1REX Build-a-thon - first of two
Rex Harper, the Bob Ross of DIY radio, master kit-builder, and build-a-thon leader extraordinaire , will hold the first of the convention's two build-a-thons -- both with a test-gear theme. At Friday's event, you'll assemble a bidirectional watt meter for QRP work, good for accurately measuring transmitter output and VSWR at power levels up to 10 watts.  This kit will require soldering, so it's best to bring a simple tool kit:  wire stripper, needle-nose pliers, a small pair of wire-cutters, a small soldering iron, 60-40 rosin-core solder, and a small soldering-iron stand or rest. A spring clamp can act as a useful third hand when soldering. A small hand-magnifying lens (or your phone's camera) also can be helpful for confirming color codes on small parts. Rex is bringing a few tools if someone forgets an item. But he doesn't have enough for everyone in the room. For details on the builds and instructions on how to sign up, visit https://www.dukecityhamfest.org/buildathon.

A Wire In The Air - What Matters Most
The magic of radio happens when we couple RF into the fabric of spacetime. We do that with an antenna. These devices are simultaneously simple and complex. It’s easy to get lost in the theory or fooled by the latest anecdote. Let’s look at what’s important in antenna choice and design. There are things that matter more than others, and it’s never perfect. And a bit of theory will guide us. Radiation resistance, loss, pattern gain, terrain, polarization, coupling, loading - they all play a role. Join me to find out what happens and what matters when we put a wire in the air.

The ABCs of QRP
You'll sometimes hear hams grumble: "Life's too short for QRP." After all, your radio is pumping out only 5 watts or less. I'll encourage you to see for yourself that life is too short not to operate QRP! It gives you the opportunity to build your own simple gear, either from a kit or from scratch, to get up close and personal with the principles of propagation and antenna design and construction, to operate from mountaintops, or go maritime mobile from a canoe or kayak. If is too short for QRP, then it's too short for fly-fishing, bow hunting, or any other activity where the thrill is in using the least amount of gear and a growing body of knowledge and experience to make contacts with hams worldwide.

C'mon in! The RF's fine!

The Electronics of Radio
The Electronics of Radio is a book designed to teach people electronics by studying the design of the wonderful NorCal 40A QRP transceiver. It grew out of an electronics class I taught at Caltech, where the students worked through the construction of a QRP transceiver, the NorCal 40A, designed by Wayne Burdick. Today’s students start with no experience in building electrical or mechanical systems. They have not tinkered with cars or built transceivers. This makes it difficult for them to appreciate the importance of many topics and to understand how the different parts of a system fit together. For instance, to many students, impedance is just a number to plug into a calculator. They are indifferent as to whether the value is 50 Ω or 1 MΩ. Building a QRP transceiver can help students appreciate that the circuits within a system may have very different impedance levels and that they need matching circuits to go from one to the other.

Although the book has been used in college courses at the University of Colorado and at Caltech, it has  been most popular with amateur-radio operators.

Lunch and Learn - Modestly priced test gear for your bench/Enter the Era of Software-Defined Test Gear
Larry will introduce you to the universe of low cost, yet highly serviceable test equipment for amateur radio applications.  You'll hear about the manufacturers of new equipment at reasonable prices, sources for used equipment, and what to watch out for in that marketplace. Finally, you'll hear about DIY test equipment construction projects that range from simple attenuators to RF power meters, signal generators and antenna analyzers.  This part of the Test Gear Trilogy will conclude with a quick look at a credit-card sized, digital, multi-function, FPGA-based device that can replicate seven different test and measurement devices and cover a frequency range out to 60 MHz. It can even function as a Software Defined Radio (SDR).

For the finale, Brent will zoom in on three competing software-defined test systems systems. Each costs less than $500 and can replace several pieces of expensive test equipment.  Devices discussed will be the Arduino family, the Red Pitaya (now STEMlab), and the Analog Discovery 2.

All in an environment where you are welcome to bring your lunch in and learn!

1.  Always ID the group you're on when you stop talking.
2.  Always wait two seconds before you key up after the end of an incoming trasnsmission.
3.  Don't announce your presence and say "listening;" be specific about why you're calling.

Ladies Sewing Circle and RF Society Forum - or – No BOYZ Allowed
If YLs had invented hamfests, the forums would be entirely different.  They would not be “classroom” style with an expert speaker pontificating using a PowerPoint presentation with an occasional question from the audience, and the distracting near-continuous door openings and closings as the panel nears its finish. If the women were in charge, a forum would be held around a large kitchen table that sported a bottomless coffee pot.   Around the table, you'd find animated conversation:  questions asked and answered; tips suggested; and experiences shared.

We’ll have to do without the kitchen table and coffee pot, but all YLs are welcome to join in the fun as we discuss YLs - Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.

RADO Class on Wildfire Communications
Wildfires are a significant concern in the West, clear to anyone who lives here or who does not but has watched the news over the past few months. This is a four-hour National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) radio operator (RADO) class for hams (especially ARES/AuxComm), Team Rubicon, and various fire/EMS agencies). To date we have taught this class to well over 300 participants in Colorado. This class will  not qualify an individual as an NWCG wildland-fire radio operator. However it is designed to both teach the skills required and clearly illustrate the difference and RADO responsibilities compared with "ham speak", "ARES/AuxComm speak" and "public safety speak."

Antennas That Work, and Why
Antennas are our link to other amateur radio stations via the ether.  Getting our rig’s radio-frequency energy to a distant station via the ionosphere is a big part of the magic of ham radio.  Sadly, much of the magic is often separated from reality in the form of exaggerated performance claims that don’t pan out, along with rumors, eHam reviews, and our need for shiny new things.  There is plenty of anecdotal material from other hams who claim their antennas “WORK,” based on  WithOut Real Knowledge, per Alan Applegate, K0BG.  I will explain how and why certain antennas work better than others and what considerations are necessary for their successful installation.  This presentation could both save you a lot of money and greatly improve your enjoyment of HF radio!

Extra! Extra! Part 2: They Need Good Pix; You Can Take Them
From local weeklies to metro dailies, many publications have had to cut staff and do more with less, including fewer photographers. Yet a good image can sell an otherwise marginal story. So make sure your never-marginal media release includes photos. Yes, you can take images that outlets will want to publish, rather than images they fell impelled to publish because a so-so image is all that was at hand. It takes practice. But you can do it, even with a cell-phone camera. We’ll cover some basics of composition, look at some nifty darkroom apps that can help add zing to your images, and analyze images you will have taken with your cell-phone camera or digital camera at the hamfest -- the assignment mentioned at the end of Part 1's talk.

How to Pass Traffic Like a Pro
The National Traffic System was founded in 1914 and is an organized system which provides for the RELAY (as in American Radio RELAY League) of  formal third party traffic across the US and Canada.
It is a free public service offered to the general public and operates 365 days a year on CW, phone, and digital modes.  It utilizes a standardized message form known as a “Radiogram.”
Traffic handling (the passing of Radiograms) is a fun and effective way to sharpen operator skills.  It also is a great way to participate in a public-service activity from the comfort of your ham shack – which means you don’t have to get up at oh-dark-thirty and stand in an arroyo somewhere for hours in order to count a bunch of passing bicyclists. (On the other hand, you won’t collect any cool tee-shirts handling traffic.).
This forum will introduce those who are interested in formal traffic handling to the “nuts and bolts” of how the National Traffic System works, how to originate a message, how to pass a message, and how to deliver a message.  We will also cover common “what to do if” problems in traffic handling and provide information on traffic handling resources.  A limited number of “Traffic Kits” will be handed out to attendees on a first come/first served basis.

The Real FT8, JT65, and JT9 SNR Revealed
This forum explains that the FT8, JT65, and JT9 Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) reports are referenced to a much wider noise bandwidth (2500 Hz) than the actual detection noise bandwidth required to successfully decode the digital data represented by the received Frequency Shift Key (FSK) tone. The FSK Tone SNR is much larger, and along with forward-error-correction coding, results in error-free message reception.

Ever wonder why QST and CQ devote so many pages to contests and their results?  Bill, an avid contester, albeit a “little gun,” will share why contesting is both great fun and benefits all aspects of operating techniques.  He’ll cover how best to use your gear, antennas, and computer logging to get the most you can out of one of the greatest challenges offered in ham radio.  Additionally, learn how to apply contesting techniques in public service and EMCOMM.

Straight Key Century Club: Where Artisanal CW Meets RF
In 2006, the Straight Key Century Club was born when a handful of participants in that year's ARRL Straight Key Night agreed to work to keep the spirit of the League's activity going all year long. Nearly 13 years later, the club has mushroomed, with members spanning six of the seven continents. (Some may be visitors to the seventh, but they haven't identified themselves yet.)  We'll take a look at the range of activities the club offers for enhancing CW skills using those reliable tools: straight key, sideswiper, and semi-automatic key, or bug. Representatives of the club will staff a club table in the Grand Foyer on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. They'll have brass on hand that you can pound, gently.
